So I bought a new camera…

April 13th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Spent all my credit card reward points (and about another $900 in cash) and picked up a new video camera. It’ll probably mostly get used at work, for instances where we need a smaller camera that an idiot like myself can use. I shot a bunch of stuff at Wrestlemania with it, just to sort of break it in. It’s a Sony HDR-XR520V and so far, it seems great. Definitely better than the $130 Polaroid video cameras I bought off Woot, but those cameras have now become, like, disposable. Maybe we’ll strap them to skateboards and roll them down a hill or something.

So, uh, since the people who might still be RSS’ing this blog are probably the only people who would care… probably going to shoot some sort of “points related” video with that camera in the near future and post it over on this giantbomb.com web site. You may have heard of it. It’s about video games and hamburgers and nudity and S-rank.

I don’t know if it’ll become a regular thing, because editorially, that entire site is like one big points report sort of thing for us. We’re a group of guys, saying what we mean about video games and having fun while doing so. Recording a video designed to be “frank discussion” becomes a little redundant at that point. But let’s see how it goes. If I can get some free time at home this week, I’ll try to at least get it recorded.

    Looking forward to the video.

I was at this MTV party and drank a bunch of Red Bull and then I wrote some stuff for work and then I read this and then I wrote this comment.

    Wooooo Points!

Memories of you praising Burnout in your POINTS! videos are what inspired me to buy Paradise the other week for 20 bucks.

    Money well spent.

I RSS the crap out of this website!

I really don’t see a whole lot of need for a points report as you have sooo much content daily already that I already can’t consume most of it, but then, I’m in the minority there.

    I need points!

What I liked about your updates were the talking about all the other gaming stuff on your mind. Course maybe those were just heady times.

In retrospect, its interesting how this was sort of an outlet even when you were at that other place of business. its like you were willing yourself into the next thing.

Yes! The points report! That’s awesome. I enjoy listening to you go on randomly about games and other not-always-related topics like Tokyo Drift. You sold me on seeing Fast and Furious.

    Also, that’s a nice camera, I’m jealous.

I could always use a little more Gerstmann in my diet. I say bring on the Points!

  12. BrianNo Gravatar Says:

Maybe you could talk about the history of games, the games that mattered, like Loderunner…

Yeah, still got your blog in my Google Reader. Never remove any personal blog feeds from it, even if they are just updated a handful of times every year. I couldn’t care less about points, but it’s good to see a new post here. Looking into getting a video camera, myself, fairly soon and I had my eye on this one, but it might be a bit over budget for me.

    Yes please.

  15. DavidNo Gravatar Says:

Yes! The points reports were awesome, glad to see you do another one.

  16. SeanNo Gravatar Says:

Yes! I loved listening to you talk about the latest games you got some achievement points in! It inspired me to always try and raise my score!

I think it’d be rad if at the end of every month, you and Ryan sat down opposite each other in the office somewhere with yor Macbooks open and competitively compared points for like a five minute video.

Glad to hear Points! is coming back in some form Jeff. Yip!

Whatever happened to those Buck Thirty Cam video’s that Vinny was doing? Those were good fun.
This video idea of yours sounds like it could be interesting, very interesting.

I would just like to point out that I don’t RSS this blog- I’m just an old-school reader of Jeff Gerstmann is Still Alive and who occasionally decides to check it out to see if there’s been a new post. You could say that I’m a sort of mad stalker.

And as for the Points! video, an observation: Whilst I agree that Giant Bomb is already a frank and honest look at the video game industry, there is nothing on the site at the moment that is anything like the old Points! format, where Jeff would just talk into the camera (with the occasional Alex Navarro in the background making silly faces) for fully 45 minutes or an hour, about the games he’s been playing and what he thinks about them. Apart from the times where Jeff or Ryan or Brad might pick up a microphone “on the road”, Giant Bomb doesn’t have any other features where the ediors speak in this off-the-cuff manner for such a long period of time.

Perhaps Giant Bomb could have its own version of On the Spot, where you get developers in to show you their new games, and we get to see the editors sitting around talking, as opposed to just hearing their voices during the podcast.

    Good videos!

    * a reference barely anyone who isn’t from the UK and over 30 will find funny. And probably only about two people in that bracket will. I’m one of them, so …

    Hey Jeff,

Congrats on the purchase! But I was just wondering — what kind of gear are you guys using to shoot those videos on GB? Are you guys ingesting and cutting the footage on Macs?

I’m a videographer so I’m just curious about this sort of stuff.

    Keep up the great work!

  24. VaminoNo Gravatar Says:
