Odds/Ends for 9/25

Welp, the bank that I owe a few hundred grand to for this house failed today. You know what that means… FREE HOUSE!

AW YEAH! Wait, are you saying it doesn’t mean that they’ll all just go away? And that I’ll probably have to keep paying money to the company that’s taking control of the old bank? Crap.

My receiver woes are at an end, and I’ve gone Onkyo. It’s the TX-SR606, brushed aluminum to be exact. It was an extra six bucks to get a shiny one, obviously totes worth it. Setting it up was crazy easy, and being able to go HDMI end-to-end eliminates a lot of unnecessary steps from the process. Between the new receiver and some new front speakers, games sound crazy. Totally hearing things I’ve never heard before, like more nuanced engine noises in Burnout Paradise. It’s pretty cool and feels like it’s worth the investment.

The only problem with all this is that it sets off a chain reaction of spending. I have a set of new front L/R speakers from Aperion Audio, and I have a new subwoofer on the way, as well. I think that by the end of all this, I’ll be able to shake the entire neighborhood apart with this setup, a move that will surely lower the property values in this neighborhood even more!

Gah, I’m talking about home prices just as much as I’m talking about hot speakers. If that’s not a clear sign that I’m slowly turning into an adult, I don’t know what is. Then again, it’s hard not to pay attention to all this stuff these days, since it’s everywhere. I bet it’s a really interesting time to be enrolled in an economics class. Lots of modern examples of things going bad to (hopefully) learn from.

It would be a really interesting time to be enrolled in an economics class if your teacher didn’t spend the hour discussing the Circus Peanuts and fly fishing.

Just finished taking an economics class. I highly recommend not taking an economics class.

    So… No free house?

I’m now contemplating replacing a good amount of my home theater equipment now…yeah, the idea of money rapidly flowing out of my account sucks. Then again, new TVs and speakers are cool.

I’ve never been a big audio guy myself. I definitely appreciate the isolation of sound, mostly for music purposes, but have yet to break into buying hot sound setups for my hot video setup. I guess I have that to look forward to once I’m living the life where I know that I shouldn’t be spending all of my disposable income on fun.

Haha, free house? sounds like a good deal to me. Getting a new audio setup soon, I’m just running some shit logitech 5.1 speakers through L/R inputs so its not really 5.1 :(

I’ll look out for you at AVS when the Onkyo starts screwing up. ;)

Sweet choice. Jeff! 4 HDMI inputs and all the new audio formats. You’ll have to keep us posted, whether you notice the difference with blu-ray audio.

Don’t start an earthquake, you do live in the bay area. When you think your music is too loud and you’re yelling at hoodlums to get of your lawn, I would then consider you an adult, an old and crusty one.

I think you should just post this stuff on Giant Bomb. I know it’s not game related, but that’s where most of the people who used to read this blog are now anyway.

Glad you have moved on up in the audio world. I remember when i upgraded to an hdmi receiver how much easier everything is just having 1 cable deliver audio and video. Ya the whole economy failing is very scary and it sucks that the us got to the point we are at.

Please don’t grow up Jeff, the world already has too many adults.

hay. so what speackers you get/got.
i read on avforms that the 606 & 605 got a real problem with “humm” coming out of the speackers at vol 40 and above, espeshaly when conected to the ps3 through hdmi. and cnet.com says the videos bad, even when you put it on pass-through mode it degrades the origanal pitcher!
so what do you think, as this is the setup i will have at home if i get this and would like to have your opinione. love the site gb, keep it up thanks.
