As Meta As It Gets

May 12th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

So I’m doing some data entry type stuff for work and I’ve got wrestling on in the background. They have a text message question tonight where they want you to vote on the following question…

“Do you think Shawn Michaels is telling the truth about his knee injury?”

…I know, super exciting stuff, right? How many realities must I pull myself back through to find the answer? I mean, are we talking “real life” or “wrestling real life” here? I feel like the layers are peeling back and that I’m seeing the very nature of the universe unfold before me… maybe this cold pizza has been in the fridge too long.

Obvs, they want people to play along with the story, that’s sort of the whole point of wrestling. It’s just weird to see them essentially ask “do you believe the lies we’re telling you in the form of a story?”

72% voted yes.

You should have seen Smackdown where they were asking people ON THE STREETS if they thought Undertaker’s “mysterious choke hold”–a gogoplata–should be banned. The answers were awesome.

Its just another one of the WWE’s fruitless attempts to blurr the line between storylines and credibility.

  3. James KNo Gravatar Says:

    Whaat? It’s not real?

    Somebody had to put that.

good point Jeff. While my interest in wrestling died out a few years ago. This post is going to be at the back of my mind all day.

Still, 72% yes is much higher than I expected as well. I would bet that if they had done a similar poll for the NFL regarding some other players (Not a huge sports fan so I can’t remember exact names on this one) that the audience would be more half and half.

Tiki Barber, Brett Farve, and Daunte Culpepper? One of those guys? People thought he was faking it because he didn’t care or he was aiming for a record or something. Anyways, I would think that even the NFL would have a 50/50 poll, so that 72% for wrestling is truely surprising.

Are you saying that wrestling isn’t real?

The last time I watched wrestling, it was still the WWF, and Andre the Giant was still alive.

Well of course he’s hurt his knee. Why would he lie? What, you’re saying that the whole sport is made up? A fake drama made only to entertain us, not a real sport? Get out.

At least with Shawn I think he has been around enough years to have some sort of knee ailment. So I suppose I should believe them?!?

  15. JoeNo Gravatar Says:

It was revealed last night that Shawn Michaels was faking the injury. Though, I probably just ruined all the fun, didn’t I?

I don’t know why, but the final line, “72% voted yes” made me giggle a bit.

wait so if he was lying does that mean he’s acting? If so does that make Shawn Michaels a good actor, or the actor playing Shawn Michaels? It can’t be the actor playing Shawn Michaels because nobody believes he’s really wrestling anyway, so that means the character that Shawn Michaels is playing is a better actor than the actor playing Shawn Michaels.

Or does that mean that Michael Hickenbottom is an unbelievably talented actor since he can act the part of someone who is obviously acting convincingly acting that he’s injured.

This sort of metaphysical conundrum is how the world ends.

Eh… Wrestling. They used to have good entertainers at one point. Now it’s repetitive crap written by racist writers.

I was at the Smackdown taping from a week ago ( with the lame tournament) and during the show they posted poll results about the banning of the Gogoplata. I thought it was weird since the show was being taped on Tuesday :-p.

WWE can predict the future I guess

To me, that question just seems to be saying something more like “tell us what we should do next with our awful story”.

I hope he’s told the WWE he really has a knee injury and this is their way of calling BS on it.

  27. MathewNo Gravatar Says:

They just want to try to get people more involved. Its not like people don’t realize that everything is staged. I mean, the only ones who will believe it is real are some of the 10 and under crowd.

  28. SerpentNo Gravatar Says:

You guys do know that knee injuries can be real in wrestling, right? In fact thats probably the most frequent injury in wrestling.
