Word Up for 03/18/2008
March 18th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Word up, blog!
Just wanted to answer a question or two. Yes, the Points! videos will continue. I’m not 100% sure where they’ll live, though. Maybe I’ll post them here and link to them from giantbomb.com, or maybe I’ll post them there and link to them from here. I’m not sure.
Noticed yesterday that my new Xbox 360 account name, GiantBombing, has risen to #1 on the 360voice.com charts, which is pretty cool. And here I was, worried that once I changed my name I would completely vanish off of lists like that…
Totally loving the town I’m working in now, even though it’s ultra-Marin-y in spots. That works out well and keeps me from losing my edge by giving me enough organic food stores to get angry at. On top of that, the town’s 7-11 has a wine section. Christ. Growing up around “wine country” has given me a very strong dislike for wine and wine culture. That probably also has something to do with my preference for cheap beer and fine malt liquors.
Starting work right as the weather got nice is working out perfect, as it’s a bit of a walk from where I park my car to the office. It’s been great.
Looks like my recently-purchased 750GB SATA drive is actually having issues, and that’s what’s been causing all my blue screens in Vista. I had been thinking it was an iTunes-related problem, because iTunes still doesn’t behave properly in Vista, but I’m attempting to copy my D drive (150GB of MP3s, to be specific) off to a USB drive and it’s died on me a couple of times now. Guess I’ll have to copy the files off in smaller chunks. It’s not marking any sectors as bad on a surface scan, so I’m not really sure what to do. Guess I’ll get everything off of it and try to RMA it.
Totally digging the AirPort Extreme I picked up. You can bypass its router functionality and let your ISP assign IPs to all of your devices. I have a range of static IPs from my ISP, so this is absolutely perfect for me. No more routing, no more hassles with forwarding port 133 to my desktop machine, none of that. Smooth sailing, at least until I get one or two more devices on my network and completely run out of IPs, anyway.
I’m installing Vista SP1 right now, and it’s about to reboot to finish up, so I should probably stop here. Keep reading giantbomb.com, we’re just getting started.

Thanks for the head up on SP1. Downloading it now.

The Sauce (hoping that’s not too foggy for you to understand, but foggy enough so that the extreme Gerstmanners don’t look for you) is a great place to be. Was looking damn good for March in your first bomb building video.
March 19th, 2008 at 12:16 am
Jeff where is this magic venture capitalist who is funding the purchase of all these new toys?
March 19th, 2008 at 12:25 am
What Hexogen said.
March 19th, 2008 at 1:27 am
Yeah seriously, I really wanna know where your income is coming from.
March 19th, 2008 at 2:48 am
Jeff, you should of waited on SP1 until next month when it’s out as an auto-update. I learned the hard way that I should never get something the second it comes out.
As for those wondering about income and funding. Here’s a small fact about running a business. You’re going to lose money when you start off, you invest a lot of your savings hoping that it all works out. Nothing is certain, but you believe that it will end up making you profit. Otherwise you wouldn’t bother running the business in the first place.
A lot of businesses shut down by overspending and thinking they’ll start making profit in a year…
Normal people like us start small and grow slowly but steadily hoping one day that we become big enough to take bigger risks and not worry about finding a corner to sleep in because we wasted all our savings on a failed project.
March 19th, 2008 at 2:52 am
Also, banks are evil. They don’t really increase your budgets. Just your spendings.
And yes, I am a little drunk. Or maybe I’m not. Bling Bling ma homies. Chicken nuggets are teh bomb.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:38 am
Vista? Wow
You are really brave !!
March 19th, 2008 at 3:41 am
I had a hell witch blue screens lately. They basically shut down my computer for a whole week… and in the end it turned out, that it was Panda Antivirus causing it. -_-
March 19th, 2008 at 4:04 am
Totally agree with you on the airport extreme - picked one up on Sunday and it’s working flawlessly!
…but that whole “expose my devices on the net” doesn’t sound too cool to me…sounds dangerous!
Keep up the good work on giantbomb!

I’ve got vista service pack 1 on my 2 vista business work laptops, but so far it’s not come down the wire on my home premium machines.
My sister’s boyfriend is having loads of issues with iTunes on his laptop and he’s running xp. I think there are some faults with the iTunes software. New podcast submissions are not showing up as quickly as they should be doing in the iTunes store either - I know, I submitted one a few days ago and its nowhere. I checked the apple forums and there are loads of posts about it.
Come on apple, get it sorted.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:58 am
How fun do you think the walk to work from you car will be when it is pourning with rain???
March 19th, 2008 at 5:09 am
Hey Jeff i have been lurking around for a long time but anyway. As a fellow Vista user i thought i might try to help you out.
With the MP3’s/files you want to copy try installing http://www.copyhandler.com/ its sorta like a download manager for copying files in windows.
It will allow you to start copying your files and if the hard drive stops mid way it will pause. Next time you start up the hard drive you can resume from where you were. Also if it does die completely on you unlike windows this program does not delete everything it has copied if the source can not be found.
Good luck with the giant bomb ill be watching

I have nothing relevant to add to this comment on this “word up” blog post. But nice read none the less.
March 19th, 2008 at 6:29 am
Nice.
Man, you must be like the luckiest man on the planet. Not alot of people can ACTUALLY say that they have ACTUALLY have made a diference on people’s lives… I mean not alot of people can start a new chapter in their life and have such a big number of people backing them up.
Well, I guess thats the whole deal… I actually taught people like that didn’t exist. Guess I was wrong.
Gotta get myself one of them fancy routers… Although not until June 12th.
March 19th, 2008 at 7:12 am
I don’t know, I would just go ahead and transition points if you plan on having other people with you on the show. It could be an extension of the Bombcast, but if it’s just you rambling about games, I would just leave it on here.

Quick question about your new router Jeff. I have the older version of the extreme (the boob-like one). Does the new extreme router has QOS settings (quality of service)? Mine does not, and when the lady gets going on the itunes music store, COD4 is awfully hard to play online.
March 19th, 2008 at 8:02 am
So, organic wine must really piss you off then huh?
March 19th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Points! was always on your personal blog even back at Gamespot. As much as I enjoy it, it’s very much a personal thing and should probably stay that way to keep it pure.
March 19th, 2008 at 8:44 am
What are you and Ryan Davis doing for income, you both hoping to get some advertising or freelance work from creating Giantbomb? D:
March 19th, 2008 at 8:50 am
When working with my routers, I sometimes think about jumping off a cliff.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:28 am
ooh my router is a pain. I reset it due to slow connections and the connection for my wii stopepd working :/ Glad the points will continue.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Oh, I should get that service pack. I was a little confused by what you said about iTunes. It’s been working fine in Vista for me. Well, at least it’s been working no worse than it did in XP, God knows it’s never been perfect.
But I’m wondering what kind of wireless card you’re using for your PC. I’m always so suspicious of wireless products ’cause it’s so easy for them to be junk.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Keep Points! here. It’s a personal thin not a business thing.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Nice to see you keeping up with your personal blog. And, I find it funny about your anger for organic foods and wine… while being a new mac fan… I guess you won’t be a turtleneck, starbuck packin’ elitist afterall lol.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:33 am
thing*
March 19th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
very swell, very awesome.
March 19th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Jeff you just demoralised me! I’ve been copying music from friends for months and i’ve only racked up 45GBs of MP3s. Damn you man, I’m also around 30,000 points of gamerscore behind you too. I have some awesome music and I didn’t play Eragon or Avatar though so I guess it’s not all about numbers
March 19th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Good to hear points will not go, but i think it should maybe become a segment on giant bomb
March 19th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Speaking of Vista and SP1, I just spent literally the last 24 hours recovering from a basicly corrupt SP1 install which rendered my system completely dead. It wasn’t even booting to the loading progress bar at the very begining. I had to use my installation disk and boot in recovery mode, then use a command prompt to search for every corrupt file installed and replace it with a working version.
I specifically waited for MS to release SP1 on Windows Update to avoid running into all the beta and RC crap bugs, AND STILL IT MANAGED TO F” MY SYSTEM UP! And it’s not just me, I’ve found hundreds of people suffering from the same exact issue after the update with no reasonable solution. What the #@#!
Good luck with your installation though!
March 20th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
But if you bypass the routing functionality of the Airport Extreme you also bypass its security features, right?
March 20th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Jeff, good update. The continuation of Points! is great news. Maybe you could answer my question there. Or, convince Mr. Davis to answer it during the podcast, as it’s been ignored 3 weeks in a row. The question is:
“Back in the days when I was a kid, me and my friends
were playing 2 games on our PCs: Duke Nukem 3D& Quake
1
We had a lot of arguments on which one was THE game. I
played the crap out of both, and I loved Duke 3D, but
my choice was always Quake. Back then, which was your
favourite and why? I’m talking JUST about the PC
versions.”

Plug’n'play baby
March 24th, 2008 at 7:12 am
Point’s should become an GiantBomb feature. still filmed in your bedroom, or, wherever.
March 25th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Loving giantbomb.com! Keep up the good work! ^__^
March 25th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
It was my understanding that iTunes doesnt behave properly with anything realy. Looking forward to the future of Giant Bomb Jeff. Dont forget about us Gamespot heads as you pave yourself a new road.
March 27th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Yeah you should keep Points! here. Its more of a personal thing. Well…. kind of.
March 29th, 2008 at 3:46 am
Keep it up man! We won’t let you fall into obscurity, no way. In addition to supporting you, I feel many of us are out to prove a point to huge companies that water down their content under the premise that they are too big to care about quality.
April 13th, 2008 at 8:47 am
Use SpinRite on that drive, lol! Have a good one.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
A couple of questions Jeff: Any issues with your consoles and the Airport Extreme? (I ask, as I’m looking to get one myself and my PS3 really hates the Linksys I’m using now.)
Also, is that Dr. Pepper XBL icon from a game? Or Marketplace?
