It’s my extreme pleasure to invite you to check out giantbomb.com. It’s the “new thing” that you’ve been hearing me and Ryan drop hints about for the past week or so. I am jumping-out-of-my-seat excited about what we’ve done so far, and the best is ahead of us. Seriously, I can’t stop smiling and it’s sort of freaking me out. Be sure to watch G4’s X-Play today, where I’m pretty sure I sort of just start excitedly speaking nonsense near the end of the interview. It was hard to maintain my composure, for sure.
And none of this would be possible without the support of the people who’ve read and commented on this blog. Watching you react over the past few months has already shaped the site we’re building, and as we work to convert the temporary blog that’s available there into a full-fledged site about games, we’ll have your thoughts and desires in mind. Together, we’ll all be able to shape Giant Bomb. It’s already my new home. It’s my hope that it will become yours, as well.

Finally, I knew something was brewing, but I was thinking more along the lines of you and others going to Gametap. They’ve been brought up numerous times in the ‘casts, I took that as a hint, since Gametap looked to be building up a featured review section. This is way more than I was expecting.
If you guys need some help from L.A. – the land of Cactus Cooler – I’ll offer my views on beverages and fast food as well.

It sort does feel a little awkward though. The whole situation with GS still left me and a lot of people still feeling awkward about the whole thing.

Hey Jeff! I live in Michigan, but I was in Fiji awhile back and came across two cans of “Pepsi Fire” and “Pepsi Ice.” The fire is cinnamon cola, and ice is mint cola. It’s surprisingly good! Awesome jeff! Sweet jesus I love this! Because whenever I read your reviews of games I used to think, that’s a little harsh, or, he’s just a fanboy, But whenever I play the games you review I completely agree with you I’m obsessed with gears of war! and I love halo 3, those may be obvious but I had my doubts and as for bad reviews I played kane and lynch (rental) and It was okay, but kind of gave me a sick feeling and the shooting was unsatisfying as well as hard to control. Kutos to you Jeff!
P.S. if you’re even reading this tell me about any openings in your new site if it’s going to be based in S.F or somewhere around the bay I am definently available.(I understand I will need to send in a resume at some point)

Hey, Jeff.
I thought you guys would be up to something by now. The xplay interview was what got me excited about it with all the cool stuff you guys will be doing.
One thing, though. I don’t know about your guys’ podcast much because it’s rated “explicit” on itunes so don’t even bother with it. That’s one thing I liked about gamespot, was that it doesn’t have any cursing and all that.
I was hoping that your new site would be similar in that regard. I know you don’t have any swearing on your blog here, which is great for me, and I just wanted to post that I would appreciate it personally if you guys would keep out the cursing.
It’s the same way for me in video games–I don’t see the need in any video game for there to be cursing. Just my opinion though.

Jeff, I am worried about the direction in which you seem to be going with Giant Bomb.
From your recent television appearances and latest podcast, I get the impression that Giant Bomb will be more opinion-driven than the previous site you wrote for.
That’s fine for columns and reviews–as long as you back up your opinions and (for reviews) also go over who will like the game, who won’t and why–but it is rarely appropriate for almost anything else, especially news.
Opinions, along with speculation, are NEVER appropriate in news stories. It is the job of a news writer to report, fact check and, when necessary, investigate. Opinions in news stories are annoying. I do not want someone effectively telling me how I am supposed to think about one issue or another. I can come up with my own opinions on them.
As for speculation, I do not want to see it in news articles either. When you speculate, you are assuming. Assumptions can be wrong, and when they are wrong they hurt your credibility.
Your recent praise of the major video game blogs for getting the news up before the full-fledged video game Web sites also worries me. The blogs regularly get the news up before the full-fledged video game Web sites because the blogs often don’t fact check, which leads to a lot of partially or completely incorrect reporting, which damages credibility.
And if you continue posting short, blog-like opinion pieces when Giant Bomb becomes a “real” video game Web site, please do not have them appear on the home page. If you continue with them, I suggest setting up a “Giant Bomb Blog” section, because blog entries on a home page make a Web site look unprofessional.
Also, I find it worrying that two of the three reviews on Giant Bomb are rated five out of five stars. You can argue that the highest score means “prime,” not “perfect,” but regularly awarding games the highest possible score still devalues the rating system.
Additionally, the promotional video at the end of your Poker Smash review needs to be removed. It’s amusing, but having it there could lead some to believe that your review is an advertorial, and that you were paid by the publisher to give it a high score. With the perception of a too-close relationship between editorial and marketing at your previous employer, this is the last thing you need.
Finally, if you haven’t already, hire a proofreader or copy editor. No matter how good a writer you are, you will miss some of your spelling and grammatical errors. I have spotted two grammatical errors on Giant Bomb. “Today was the first day in the office for Ryan and I,” should be, “Today was the first day in the office for Ryan and me,” and, “We’re opening up this blog, where myself and others will be writing about games,” should be “We’re opening up this blog, where I and others will be writing about games.” Even minor, common mistakes like these can make you look unprofessional.
I want to like Giant Bomb. You and Ryan Davis are talented writers and I respect your opinions. But if the site becomes filled with unprofessional, blog-like writings and has opinions and speculation in inappropriate places, I will go elsewhere for my video game coverage.
