A "Relaxing" Morning
March 2nd, 2008 at 11:57 am
There’s something almost soothing and purposeful about waking up and discovering you are having some kind of computer trouble. Apparently, after working for months in its current location, my wireless access point has decided that it’s done functioning properly. If I move it, it seems to work, but only intermittently. Wonderful. That makes it more than a simple configuration error, I’d bet. This also means I can’t get anything other than my desktop PC online unless I want to start running cables all over the place. I broke free from the cabled lifestyle some time ago, and I’m not willing to go back. Not now, not ever, you hear me?!
So goodbye to the ol’ WG602v3. It’s served me (mostly) well, but I’m not about to start playing some Wi-Fi form of “jiggle the handle” just to stay online. I’m going to run out and get something new. I’ve been meaning to get something that will work with my DS, anyway, so it’s not all bad.
Considering I’ve managed to get my PC to stop locking up so often, I guess it was only a matter of time before something else went awry, anyway.

I have never been a fan of Netgear routers. I have had two bad Netgears in the past. I have always liked the WRT54G Linksys routers. They have always served me well, with multi Xbox 360s and stuff running.
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Hate to have problems with routers, when mine boggled up I was pissed.
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Sorry to hear that Jeff. Sometimes technology can be a sweet bliss of streaming bits; sometimes technology can be a bitch. Unfortunately for me and you it’s the latter as my PS3 gave out on me yesterday. Hope you get a good replacement.
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I have a Linksys WRT54G, and that works fantastically with everything from my PC to my Wii to my DS.
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:45 pm
get a linksys. its just great!
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:52 pm
“I have a Linksys WRT54G, and that works fantastically with everything from my PC to my Wii to my DS.”
Same here. Jeff, you should get a WRT54G, they are awesome.
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
thats the same one i have, the WRT54G
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Oh wireless routers, how I love them. My family has all manner of technology about the house and all requiring wireless access. My brother studies networks in college and even he has trouble keeping everything working. I on the other hand refuse to be a part of any of this wireless nonsense and drilled a hole in the wall, ran some cables through from the router (to the ps3, 360, and my pc) and have never had a problem. Well apart from getting my NAT settings sorted . . . Console gaming is getting very close to its PC counterpart in ways; compulsory installs, swapping hard drives, streaming media. Slightly worrying.
What I really love about this technology is how it always seems to stop working for no good reason, as in your case. The solution usually involves large sums of money too. All so we can go online and be abused by homophobic racist 13 year olds. Where would we be without all of this tech eh?
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:00 pm
eh well. I just run my cables everywhere because im stubborn and don’t want to spend the money to update my equipment just yet.
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:00 pm
I agree with ben the wrt54g uses good ol proven tech from cisco and it is :
Solid as a rock! (kudos to arrested development)
On the other hand wireless (draft) n routers i bet would be more inviting nowadays. You got that shiny macbook pro which supports n speeds.
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Sucks about the Wi-Fi and the lock ups on your PC. So now that you have a mac do you find your self using it more?
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Yeah pick up something “n” class Jeff. Netgear/Belkin
Been through a few over the years, What I would like to know is how can someting with no moving parts wear out?
It’s crazy, Or is it just pushing the envelope?
All said it’s not really a big re-investment is it.

I’m currently facing the issue where I need to unplug and replug my wireless router to renew the IP for it every 20 minutes. It also wont accept the admin login information I gave it, and it doesn’t accept the default admin login information. It’s awesome.
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Get an Airport Extreme!
March 2nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm
I hate wireless routers with fiery burning passion. I ALWAYS used to have problems with my routers so now I just have huge cables running all around my goddamn house. It sucks.
Anyway, RIP WG602v3. We hardly knew thee.
March 2nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Hey Jeff, seeing as you have a MacBook Pro, ever considered an Airport Extreme? Hell, what about a new Time Capsule? If you’re really digging the Mac experience, maybe give those a shot before you dive into the Belkin/D-Link madness that is of the wonderful world of wireless routers.
March 2nd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
jeff, i tried some gatorade tiger….it’s tits. good lookin out on the media coverage on this important issue
oh and yeah, linksys 54 whatever is the shit, i have one as well. it gets tons of chicks too
March 2nd, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Everyone seems to love the linksys but I’ve never had anything but problems with them. Lately (the last three years or so) I’ve been using D-Link, and I rarely have anything go wrong. I even saw one that had wireless-N on sale at a best buy a couple weeks ago. If it were my money, I’d go with that, good luck to you.
March 2nd, 2008 at 4:08 pm
I know how frustrating it is to have an internet connection problems, so I feel ya…anyway, when is your next POINTS!?
March 2nd, 2008 at 4:45 pm
whatever router you do get, just make sure it can use DD-WRT.
March 2nd, 2008 at 5:11 pm
D-Link DGL-4500 is the business. Well worth the money.
March 2nd, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Aww, poor Jefferson!
March 2nd, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Sorry to hear about your wireless router. But this post isn’t about that completely.
I was watching Brewster’s Millions today and I just realised that you, Jeff are the spitting image of John Candy. And you’re both hilarious.
Has anyone mentioned this to you before?
March 2nd, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Hey Jeff,
The DS requires a WEP connection. That’s pretty flimsy security so you could keep the Netgear and use it to have a WEP subnet just for your DS!
C.
March 2nd, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Hahaha. Ah yes. Computers. Any comment I can leave here is saying too much. You all know the deal. Wonderful.
And these days the consoles are becoming more and more like a PC so soon we´ll be replacing console fans, their crashed hard drives and fixing lock-ups or replacing software. Lovely!
March 2nd, 2008 at 6:42 pm
I junked my old wi-fi router that did not work well with DS/PSP/ps3/wii for the Dlink gamerslounge DGL-4300.
everytime a console comes out D-link puts out an up date so they consoles work with out hassles. the last one was when the wii hit and they imporved wii-connect 24 connection since it connects every 5 mins to check nintendos servers some routers have problems with it.
My old router I had to jump through hoops to get the DS to work this thing does it every time flawless and I do not have to do anything to ger DS wifi working.

check out the emulator on the porduct page it has a sweet interface with tons of option for games and to set up servers, I love it.
It’s only wireless g-though I have had it 3 yers and never ever lost a conenction with my consoles or PC with this ever. Best router i have had I hope there is a 802.11n version sometime, not that I need the speed g- is still faster than my internet connection and everything else i got.
March 2nd, 2008 at 6:51 pm
OHh wait they do have a new 802.11N version of the D-link gamers lounge DGL- 4300.
It looks sweet I have no need to upgrade my 2-3 year old DGL-4300 but I a tempted now that new model looks sweet.

hi jeff. what are your thoughts on the lack of current gen exploration/action games such as soul reaver and shadowman? It seems like modern games have traded the expansive, in depth game worlds of old for much smaller albeit more highly detailed games, as well as almost completely dispensing with the exploration and puzzle solving in favor of god of war style action. I for one would prefer a longer, more involved quest over what I see as the current spate of eyecatching but ultimately superficial titles.
March 2nd, 2008 at 7:22 pm
I’ve been having my own issues too. I can’t figure out why my Xbox 360 won’t connect to my Network HDD (with media server built in) anymore. Worked fine for months, then poof it won’t connect. Everything else in the house connects to it just fine. Even my PS3 connects perfectly, but luckily that can’t play any video from it without a firmware upgrade that isn’t out yet :-\
March 2nd, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Well, I’ve got computer problems…it all happened last night on March damn 1st…I’m sick so you know I’m going to cough. I was sitting at my computer, and I was thirsty, so i have a bottle of water right next to it. I pick up the bottle put the water into my mouth and and then all of sudden I coughed…with the water in my mouth…at my laptop…I was able to wipe up all of the water, but then this morning i realized 3 of the damn keys don’t work… the number five, six, and the underscore/dash key….god i hate my computer…
March 2nd, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Ugh … technology sucks sometimes. I was moving my old desktop PC to another room and for some reason the hard drive wasn’t screwed in and it got kicked around inside the case when I was moving it, now the damn thing is broken. :_(
March 2nd, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Go with a Linksys if you can Jeff. I love mine, and it works great with my DS. I keep the encryption on WEP so that it works properly with no trouble.
While my Gaming Rig is “hardwired” to my wireless router, I have my Laptop,360,PS3,Wii, and DS all running wireless on that baby. No problems at all.
I got the WRT54G model btw. It works great with G and B.
March 2nd, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Wi-Fi is a pain, but this is the future. Soon cables will be history, and we’ll all eat radio waves 24 hours a day.
March 3rd, 2008 at 1:24 am
Technology makes me cry. Perhaps I should consider neo-ludditism.
March 3rd, 2008 at 3:16 am
Hi Jeff,
I would suggest a D-link. Not only it’s a good and reliable brand but the web management tool is really well done. Much better that netgear anyway
My DGL- 4300 is excellent.
Regards from Italy
March 3rd, 2008 at 3:19 am
Sorry..
I’ve forgot to mention that I had no issues with X360, PS3,PSP, DS, Wii, Itouch.
They working fine with Mac address filter and SSID Hidden
regards
March 3rd, 2008 at 7:31 am
Well, the DS only supports WEP which really sucks if you’re serious about your Wi-Fi.
March 3rd, 2008 at 9:33 am
I peed on your router Friday night when you were in the other room.
Oh, and i bought this and it’s been great. Flux said he knows someone else who has it and also thinks it’s great.

Funny you mention that cause someon passed along to me this morning a wireless keyboard & mouse, they said it would not work, I will take it home and make it work or toss it. So you will make your DS work with wireless also ? Wow !
March 3rd, 2008 at 11:52 am
Just get a WRT54G/WRT54GS and install DD WRT.
March 3rd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Down with evil technology, let’s get back to the roots!
March 3rd, 2008 at 12:47 pm
I Use a 3COM router for my Wi Fi, i had a little trouble, but it works fine, ohh wait, then i accidentally deleted my settings on my DS, and i dont think im gunna set it back up, just because it had to sort out certain setting to get it work last time.
Anyway, i had a USB wi fi access point for my DS, which ment my PC had to be on, but it wouldnt work for me anyways, because my PC hates me, fucking racist.
I’d send it you, but i live in the UK, and it would probably cost more for me to send it you than what its worth.

*shivers at the thought of evil cables dragged throughout the apartment*
