Me on X-Play Tonight
February 7th, 2008 at 6:13 am
Oof… I haven’t seen this side of 6AM in months. Why am I up so early, you ask? Not because I’ve been playing Poker Smash all night, though I can see why you’d say that.
It’s because I’ll be appearing on G4’s X-Play tonight in the Head to Head segment. So I’ll be appearing on a TV that’s inside a TV show. Mindblowing! It’ll air tonight at 5PM and 8PM, both Pacific times. Check your local listings and tune in!
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get these Golden Grahams inside me so I can get on the road.
[UPDATE] The “Web Xclusive” side of the interview is now up on X-Play’s site. For the rest, which also includes former Shacknews EIC Chris Remo, you’ll have to wait until the show airs. If I had known it was going to be Former Editor Day over at X-Play, I would have dressed up! Actually, I guess wearing what can now only be known as the Penny Arcade shirt is probably fitting.
[UPDATE 2] The on-air segment has been posted online right over here. Also, I made a slight correction to the reference to Chris Remo’s employment status earlier today. Apparently I misunderstood the situation. As someone who does understand what it’s like to be out of work, I opted not to dig any further into the topic.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:21 am
Awesome! I’ll be sure to watch!
February 7th, 2008 at 6:32 am
Will this be available online at some point (not really familiar with G4, and being in Europe, I doubt it’ll air here =).
February 7th, 2008 at 6:37 am
Shoot, i live in Florida. Can you guys lemme know if we have G4 here? I have a TV & cable, but I never use it except for playing games. Online would be exquisite if Jeff provides a link (to the past).
February 7th, 2008 at 6:43 am
If ever there was a man made for tv its Gerst……………..mann……….
February 7th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Golden Grahams…I’ve always had a preference for Lucky Charms!
February 7th, 2008 at 7:04 am
Dude, I live in Pembroke Pines FL and yes we do have G4. At least Comcast has it. I do hope they pick a better topic than last week’s. Shane and Hilary weren’t prepared to talk about the Unreal Engine lawsuit cause no one really knows what is going on with that.
I’m guessing since they asked Jeff to participate they’ll probably be talking about how game journalism outlets get pressured by publishers to score their games better.
Give ‘em hell, Jeff.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:23 am
Congrats on the XPlay appearance. I can’t wait to see you and Sesslar duke it out.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:29 am
Great news man!! I watch x-play and check this blog everyday! I’ll be watching tonight for sure!
February 7th, 2008 at 7:35 am

February 7th, 2008 at 7:36 am

Anyway, good luck with that…
February 7th, 2008 at 7:36 am
Sweet, their new format is actually really good. Thank god because they needed an overhaul.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:44 am
I don’t get in X-Play, hopefully someone will upload it on the YouTubes or something.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:46 am
Thanks
February 7th, 2008 at 7:47 am

February 7th, 2008 at 7:51 am

February 7th, 2008 at 8:11 am

February 7th, 2008 at 8:33 am

February 7th, 2008 at 8:49 am
Go Jeff!! Moving on up! to the east side! to a deluxe apartment in the sky!
February 7th, 2008 at 8:53 am
I have a meeting I have to be at tonight, but I’m Tivo’ing that bitch! You better not dissapoint…
Actually, as long as it gives me something to watch while I’m eating Taco Cabana, it’ll be alright with me…
February 7th, 2008 at 8:56 am
wow great jeff!!!!!!!!!! gooooooooooooooooooooo Jef!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 7th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Is Poker Smash any good? It looks rad, but there aren’t any reviews up on the interweb yet, as far as I can see.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Jeff! Brother, that’s awesome for you. Unfortunately for me I don’t get G4, so is there any way you can post a video or a link to it or something? I’d love to watch this seeing as we haven’t heard from you in any media form since the Game Sages podcast you did with IGN. Give ‘em hell, Jeff. Give ‘em hell,
February 7th, 2008 at 9:23 am
Please upload a video for it. I’d love to see it but I don’t have G4.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Sweet, I’ll be sure to watch it tonight. And I totally agree with Frank on the Cookie Crisp.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:35 am
yay!! I can’t wait!
February 7th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Poker Smash is pretty awesome. I’m waffling on using the MSP I got for Christmas to buy it, but I was holding out on something else. I rarely seem to justify buying MSP, so pretty much the only time I get some is as a gift from somebody else.
I was hoping to hold on to it for Castle Crashers or something. But Poker Smash is like Planet Puzzle League but instead it’s poker and there’s fireworks and bullet time and bombs and it’s awesome.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:36 am
I’m pumped. Hope you enjoyed your Golden Grahams.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Aaarf dam !! We don’t have G4 here, so i have no chance to see you
February 7th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Would CNet ever let you be a guest on on the spot :p
February 7th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
It’s already on X-Play’s website…
Here’s the link: http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/features/20161/XPlay_Web_Xclusive_Jeff_Gerstmann_Interview.html
February 7th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
I’m sorry but that was only a web exclusive thing… >.>
Though for all those that can’t watch X-Play, or don’t have G4, you can find the interview on the website.
Sorry about the mistake.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Awesome, more Jeff makes everyone happy.
Im will not watch it since i live in Sweden. If its on the net somewhere after it aired then show me the link.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
For once there will be a reason to watch X-Play. Someone on their will know what they are talking about.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMFG setting like a MILLION reminders, I live in Canada and I’m really really to have this on digital cable! I love X-Play and even if I just see a picture of you on it for half a second I WILL EXPLODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YAYAY
February 7th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Poker Smash can’t possibly beat this week’s Virtual Console release of the NES version of Operation Wolf!
February 7th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Yeah, are you allowed back On The Spot maybe as a guest, or would CNET suits have you incarcerated?
February 7th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I don’t get G4, which I believe for the first time ever, I regret not having. But the online extra was a good watch, albeit damn short.
February 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
OMG I SAW HIM BLINKING!! *BOOM* lol
February 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Somebody got to record this and put it up on youtube or something! I don’t get XPlay where I live!
PRETTY PLEASE!
February 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
So was Chris fired or former, which one Jeff?
February 7th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
That’s 3 RSS feeds that has told me this info!
February 7th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I would love to see this especially considering I don’t get G4. Any chance G4 will be throwing this episode on their website?
February 7th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
This will be the first time that I’ve watched G4 in about a year.
February 7th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
It’s just a big SNARKFEST?
Ahahaha. Nice one, Jeff.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
It’s great seeing you get out there so quickly after Gamespot, it must be nice having a lot more freedom with these things. Great Job with G4, I hope to see more of your stuff soon.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Just watched you on X-Play, first time I’ve watched G4 in literally at least a year… was awesome, I swear, you’re more popular now, by NOT being a part of GameSpot, sadly. We miss you at GameSpot though. It’s great to still see you doing stuff on video games, I read every Blog post you make. Keep up the great work, I hope one day I can get into the industry like you are.
P.S. You’re as funny as ever.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Awesome. I can honestly say that this is the first time X-Play has ever been appointment television for me.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Just saw the link to your blog on X-Play so I figured I’d check it out. I can’t wait for you to let us know what your next project is. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
I hope I’m not a “vocal minority” but, I just have a gut fealing…
PS. X-Play really milked this when they said “…You won’t believe what he has to say!” in the previews.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Dude. That was fast. Very quick draw.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
that is one slick shirt.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Great to see you in the media again! Hopefully appearances like these can be a regular occurrence. I’ll be standing by.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Just saw X-Play, Good to see you keeping sharp.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Good stuff. I hope to see more of you soon. …Wait, that sounds wrong.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
In case you missed it on g4 they put up a video of it. Pretty good stuff
http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/features/20164/Head_to_Head_Gerstmann_vs_Remo.html
February 7th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
What was that comment that Adam through out right at the end? Something about a Virtua Fighter 3 tv review?
February 7th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
at the end of the bonus online interview, I should say
February 7th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Yeah, I’m wondering that myself. Virtua Fighter 3TB was a pretty big letdown and the review on GS isn’t Jeff’s. I know Jeff is a pretty big VF fan. Anyone know what this was a reference to?
February 7th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Yeah what Virtua Fighter 3tb review was he talking about? I tried to google it but nothing came up. Mind digging up that old review and posting it for some comic relief?
February 7th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Good show. I hope to see more of these types of appearances in the future. Keep up the good work!
February 7th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Good interview
February 7th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
“Blogger, Gerstmann.com”. Nice title man :))
February 7th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
i stand corrected,”jeffgerstmann.net”.still,awesome title
February 7th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
I would like to see more interviews with you, that was really good.
February 7th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
awesome show, still sharp
February 7th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Not such a big fan of X-play to be honest but i enjoy your views and what not! Really looking forward to the next Points tho!!!!!!!!!!
February 7th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Good job on X-play! I think that sort of dialouge between editors really allows you to show off all your game knowledge which is awesome! Hope to see some more appearances elsewhere in the near future. Keep up the good work.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Enjoyed the segment. Keep sharp.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
You rock Jeff, keep it up
February 7th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Wait, you’re the infamous Jeff Gertsmann behind that Twilight Princess review? For shame, sir. For shame.
The whole basis for this segment seems a little weak. I could just as easily trot out a few innovative Japanese games and a few Western rehashes and make the opposite argument, but at least they did acknowledge that there’s stuff like No More Heroes coming out of Japan. And that shot of Super Mario Galaxy in the intro kinda bugs me. I thought that game struck just the right balance between innovation and tried-and-true gameplay.
Anyway, you did very well, though it would have been even better if you had cut the host off after he introduced you as Jeff Gertsmann and said “Hey, funnyface! It’s Gerstmann!”
February 7th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Hey Jeff, Good to see ya again buddy. Your opinions on the gaming industry need to be heard. It’s nice to see your still alive. I hope after all the recent events, you know how respected and trusted you are, and your views on gaming are incredibly missed. Thanks.
February 7th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Great job jeff. You belong on television somewhere…I hope whatever you do includes video/audio because you’re just about the only knowledgeable game journalist that looks natural doing it.
Maybe you can do a spot every week at the end of “60 minutes” about video games. Who needs Andy Rooney?
February 7th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Jeff Jeff Jeff Jeff Jeff….
Where did I go wrong? I worked long and hard to keep you from doing the right thing, and then you go and TELL THR TRUTH IN A REVIEW????
Uch. I’m so ashamed.
Oh, and I know it’s been 16 years, but I’m STILL waiting for you to make me the video of MST3K Gamera movies…
February 7th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Is this for real? Japanese games not innovative, versus what? Thousands of crappy american first person shooters. Or beter yet, world war 2 over and over and over again. BTW, turn-based combat is still here for a reason,to strategically take control of a party. Take that away and it’s not an rpg anymore.
February 7th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Japanese games have been doing the same thing with RPGs for years now..
Some innovations that have come from the US side of things would be a game like Portal, or BioShock, or how about even Gears of War. I was tired of 3rd Person Shooters for a while (since Max Payne 2) but the feel of GoW felt new and fresh and greatly helped to revitalize the genre. With Japanese RPG’s you have the same thing over and over again. Maybe a different plot, protagonist, and attacks, but it’s always the same thing in one form or another.
February 7th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Good watch!
I always get hyped for any type of media you have made or have been in. I guess it’s a sign of fandom, although I know you’re just soem regular guy who also likes games.
I guess it’s just the notorioty of it all.
February 7th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
A little late, but just seen the show. Dissapointing at least, a 5 minute clip where the topic is entirely false. There are TONS of extremely original japanese games not sticking to the formula: Nights, Warioware, Valkyrie Profile to name a few but there are many more newer ones. Jeff was great for the 2 minutes he had to talk, but regretfuly X-play dissapoints still…
I seen some of their reviews on youtube and they are weak lemonades for ultra-casual gamers
February 7th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
The whole premise of the discussion was flawed imo and very narrow minded.
The examples of “innovative” western games were Prince of Persia the assassin edition and FPS #492 and the Japanese games were sequels in a franchise built on a certain type of gameplay. It’s not innovative just because it’s a new IP.
There are of course innovative games coming both from Japan and from western developers. Take a game like Katamari Damacy for example, wonderful innovative title that we probably would never have seen from a western developer and that’s the beauty of Japanese games, that you can get those games once in a while.
Sure there are lot of Gundam games and Naruto games etc but you have to look beyond that and not just pick and choose a few games to point your finger at and say that Japan isn’t innovative.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Just caught your ‘exclusive web content’ on the X-Play site. I really believe your break from Gamespot is for the best. You are an articulate gamer who STILL seems to enjoy playing games. Good luck with your future projects and I hope you keep doing what your doing.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
I really enjoyed the segment and Jeff’s insights. I’m eagerly waiting to see what Jeff does next (his own site, I hope, and I have no doubt it would be better than any already out there!). Whatever he does, he will be seen as the game journalist with honesty and integrity. I love Jeff’s reviews and follow his blog every single day. I can say without hesitation that he is the best in the business.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Hey Jeff
I saw your interviews and I must say that you are 100% right about gaming Journalism. Anyway I am always happy to hear your thoughts. Keep up the good work
February 8th, 2008 at 12:31 am
awsome stuff man, did it like a pro. dw the shirt was madd
February 8th, 2008 at 12:54 am
Gerstmann + X-Play=SNAP!
February 8th, 2008 at 1:57 am
About time the japanese-fanboy train pulled into the reality station - I was beginning to think that no one was willing to tell it like it is:
Japanese do not by any means hold a monopoly on innovation in gaming.
February 8th, 2008 at 3:31 am
The web exclusive interview was nice. The TV show not.
How are American games more innovative than Japanese ones? Just look at all those games coming out for DS and Wii. Who makes all those games born of crazy ideas?
Speaking of crazy ideas: 99 Tears sounds so crazy and still so breathtaking.
February 8th, 2008 at 4:12 am
Thank you for complaining about snarky comments from critics and reporters. It’s getting out of control and making me want to avoid a few too many video game Web sites and magazines.
Call a dog a dog (if you’re a critic, not if you’re a reporter), but don’t be obnoxious about it. “Proving” that you’re funny or cynical or “edgy” at all times is unprofessional and annoying.
February 8th, 2008 at 4:16 am
Anyone else notice that Adam Sessler pronounced Jeff’s last name as “Gertsmann”?
February 8th, 2008 at 4:29 am
Wearing the Penny Arcade T-shirt was classic. Nice job working that whole internet icon thing. I sure hope all you former editors have some big secret mission going on. I have high hopes that you, Rich, Ryan, Greg, and Alex are going to unit to form some Crazy Tavelling Willburys of gaming journalists.
February 8th, 2008 at 4:32 am
Quite the popular blogger dude with other gaming peoples, hope you ain’t blushing because I would.
That Adam dude is pretty creepy to me, lucky you for not having to deal with him in person…
Also, you keep on mentioning this something other project… I’m curious to what that could be…
February 8th, 2008 at 5:08 am
True Adam is a little bit off but I prefer him over some hollow headed 10 dollar hair cut Hollywood type reading off a teleprompter.
He knows his stuff.
February 8th, 2008 at 5:18 am
And then this site was slammed with every kid watching G4. Just playing, I really liked what you had to say.
February 8th, 2008 at 5:20 am
Great work Jeff! Can’t wait to see what is next for you.
February 8th, 2008 at 5:39 am
I’m glad to see your still a viable media talent in your old age. But I have a question not pertaining to this topic, so, I hope this is the right space for it.
How do you feel about the lateness of some of gamespot.com’s recent reviews? Timeshift on PS3 was 2 1/2 month’s late and now Undertow’s review has clocked in at around the same time as well. Forget about their supposed lack of “editorial integrity” and let’s focus on the lack of quality work for a second. It disturbs me.
February 8th, 2008 at 6:08 am
Both Adam and Morgan kept saying “Gertzmann”. Haha, dyslexic fools…..
February 8th, 2008 at 7:19 am
Dude, you every thought about doing a Video Podcast?? LOL Great work!
February 8th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Dude you’ve guest appeared on so many of these shows and they all get your friggin’ name wrong. Doesn’t that piss you off?
February 8th, 2008 at 8:54 am
Loved the show. I wish you had more screen time though, Jeff.
February 8th, 2008 at 9:14 am
Your insight on the Japanese development was interested. Personally I didnt like how Adam asked you about your employment termination. It felt like as if he was playing the role of cheap and scummy nickel journalists. I have a lot of respect for him but as this industry maintains a small size, I think he should be looking out for fellow journalists and not try to dig dirt on them… Just my two cents.
Onto the important question… Are platformers dead?
February 8th, 2008 at 9:23 am
Beware the Return of Gerstmann!
February 8th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Albeit slightly brief it featured JEFF!! Awesome segment man … hope to see more of you and looonger segments.
February 8th, 2008 at 9:53 am
In addition … love the t-shirt
February 8th, 2008 at 10:24 am
That shirt needs to get eBayed NAO.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:36 am
I’m amazed by the change that show took for the better. I haven’t watched it in years due to it’s out of date information and ancient reruns.
The topic is “ripped from the headlines” and is very topical give nthe games mentioned. I’ve been feeling that way about Japanese games for a few years now, especially the RPG genre, but even the few action games are feeling too old without innovation. People bitch about how the 360 isn’t doing well in Japan. My answer is so what. They don’t matter and would rather play DS games anyway. Capcom is probably the only major studio that gets the Western taste, or at least knows they need to try different things. DMC4 was a departure from that mindset, going back to old-fashioned design, but it was mainly a way to get that tired game out the door and be done with it.
One could argue Konami is starting to come around too, but MGS is still a very Japanese game, the new one has some Western elements but it’s still far too weird to be in the same league as GRAW or R6.
So now Ryan left GS too. Are you guys planning some crazy site you all contribute to? I hope, that would be crazy.
It reminds me of Blues Brothers where they’re getting the band back together, but they need to get two people out of “those high payin’ gigs”. You need to get Carrie and Greg out of EA by threatening to trash whatever games they’re working on (Warhammer sux) unless they join the crew.
We’re on a mission from Provo.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Nice to hear you again Jeff. Hey, you really should get some Google ads or something on your blog. I really want you to get paid for all the stuff you have to say.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Why is it called head to head? You guys seemed rather seperate if you ask me. Good segment anyway, hope to see some more.
February 8th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
i’m excited for the future.
February 8th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Wow, that was a short segment. Oh well, it still featured Jeff.
February 8th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
I just saw the segment today, thats how I found your blog Jeff! Intresting debate, a lot of good points were made. I really don’t think Japanese gaming will die off anytime soon, theirs a reason why JRPG’s sell millions in Japan compared to American, and why “western” RPG’s sell more in..well western countrys then in Japan.
February 8th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Yeah good segment.
Great seeing you on a screen again buddy. Have you been working out? lol (Other than Wii punching)
Good luck in the job search.
February 9th, 2008 at 9:49 am
@Mehar: He didn’t say they were going to “die off”, I don’t know where you got that (other than you’re probably a defensive Otaku).
He just stated the pure fact that most Japanese games are becoming stale from a gameplay standpoint, and the global sales data on these titles (excluding a few Nintendo titles) reflect that.
February 9th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Cannot wait to see what your doing
Website, TV Show, Magazine
Whatever it is, im investing
February 10th, 2008 at 12:46 am
I thought Adam points were completely uncalled for. Since when is it only in Japan? Hello isnt Madden coming out each year with small improvements just as bad? Thanks though Jeff for atleast saying it was worldwide.
February 10th, 2008 at 9:54 am
My mom banned me from X-Play since she likes Fox News and x-Play was “bashing” Fox News recentlly, so I won’t be able to watch it sorry.
P.S. In case you don’t remember me I’m supersonic49 on GS. But you still probably don’t remember me so I’ll just drop it.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:14 am
Hey are you and alex and remo and other people brewing something up ? Like a new website maybe ?
Anyways keep up the good work , pretty good weblog . It would have been great if you did some features though if u have the time and intrested , Like some in-depth stuff .
P.S : Congrats on the new gamertag pic . Dont know when you changed that since I havent been here for a few days .
February 15th, 2008 at 4:35 am
Cool!
February 21st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
you have hair on your head
