30 Hours
January 26th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
What is "the amount of time I’ve spent playing Burnout Paradise since it was released last Tuesday?"
My nerves are shot. My eyes are a bit sore from staring at the screen so intensely. As soon as I decide to stop playing it a bit, I’ll write something more substantial about it, but I still have 49% of the game to complete.
It’s awesome and straddles the line between old Burnout feel and new ideas. I have a feeling that it could have used more tutorial stuff or a little more direction at the beginning. Most of the players I’m running into online have no idea what showtime mode is because they’re trying their hardest to ignore everything the lame radio DJ has to say.
More later.
January 26th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
DJ atomic isn’t lame, hes EXTREME.
January 26th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
wow 30 hours! that’s extreme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 27th, 2008 at 12:00 am
I agree. Not everything in the game is obvious and I sometimes find it hard to listen to everything the DJ tells you. I bet most of the reason why some people in Freeburn don’t participate in the challenges is because they don’t even know what a challenge is.
January 27th, 2008 at 12:01 am
Oh, and remember what a godsend the DJ off/on switch in Burnout 3 was? Yeah . . . Paradise . . .
January 27th, 2008 at 12:15 am
DJ ATOMIKA GOT MAD SKILLS IN RACING BUT HES NEVER AROUND TO SHOW OFF. WHAT GIVES.
January 27th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Atomicka > Striker. That still doesn’t make him any good and it’s a tossup as to whether or not he’s better than the music.
January 27th, 2008 at 1:24 am
You are my idol. I want to be just like you, Jeff. L O L.
January 27th, 2008 at 1:25 am
Yeah, I haven’t played it online yet, but I did have to look in the manual to find out that you have to be looking at the showtime time score to set a time for the roads. But it’s like one of the first things the manual says so it wasn’t too bad.
I don’t really find the DJ guy that annoying, definitely not as bad as I was expecting after playing the demo, but I don’t think I’ve even heard him say the same thing twice yet… also up around 30 hours.
I do imagine he’ll be getting annoying as soon as he starts to loop or whatever though. But by then the songs will be annoying too so maybe I’ll just turn them down and play music from my stereo or something… is his voice on the same volume control as the music? or is he considered a sound effect?
January 27th, 2008 at 1:26 am
I don’t know if it’s the same in the american version but in the european demo you can turn off the tips and she(in germany the dj is a woman) shuts up.
January 27th, 2008 at 1:43 am
20 hours in 2 days
personally i am mixed about it, i have yet to write my full feelings about the game, i need to clock in some more time. But long story short, im missing my old Burnout
January 27th, 2008 at 1:56 am
I’ve played 16 hours with a total of 47% complete so far. 30 hours, though huh? That’s quite a bit, I assume you’ve been spending alot of time in online races…or just cruising around.
I’m really hoping I’ll get to the point where I’ll be familiar enough with the entire map to not have to constantly look at the mini-map in the corner.
You know how when you first play Grand Theft Auto games, and the map seems HUGE and you think you’ll never master it and remember where everything is? Then it all just clicks and you know your way around? Um, yeah. I need that to happen.
January 27th, 2008 at 1:56 am
Showtime, done properly, is a beautiful thing.
The GameStop car is a hell of a lot more useful than I thought it would be, especially considering the unlock codes for all the bonus cars are online now.
Am I the only one wishing the classical music was accessible outside of Picture Paradise Idle mode? To cause chaos in Showtime to the tune of The Four Seasons would be surreal, if nothing else.
January 27th, 2008 at 2:00 am
I bought Assassin’s Creed on Wednesday (chance would have it I went to the store originally to buy Burnout, they didn’t have it, left with Assassin’s,) and have played 35 hours of that so far. The ending credits are rolling as I type this.
It’s been a good week.
January 27th, 2008 at 2:30 am
I’ve think for the first 48 hrs I played something like ~22 of them since I was home sick from work (yes I was really sick okay). Have been playing mostly offline and have currently unlocked 30/50 achievements with a total of 510 GS. Still have that damn 10x multiplayer in Showtime to unlock, always stops spawning busses at 9x >_<
January 27th, 2008 at 2:54 am
30 hours, huh.
So i got it yesterday, played it for 5 hours and i’m at 25%. I think i’ll finish the offline stuff first and then get going with the online. Kind of hate seeing the good cars online before i unlocked them myself.
January 27th, 2008 at 3:17 am
Can’t wait for your “full review” of the game jeff
i’ve been playing for about 15 hours now, and im loving it more, the more i play it. Things i thought was going to be an issue for me, so wasn’t. Like not beeing able to restart a race for instance. If i fail a race or realize that im definatly going to loose it, I just pull over to the side, and find anotherone. I find this makes the game flow much better for me. Events are usualy very close by, except if an event ends up in the windfarm/observatory hills.
Anyways, 99 more wins untill I get my elite license, better get cracking.
January 27th, 2008 at 3:18 am
I decided to pick it up on Friday, which was the launch day here in the UK. So far, I’m really impressed. It’s exceeded my expectations by quite a bit.
Jeff, clear some space on your friends list. We need to get some online Burnout going. Hope we can have a game soon
(If you do clear any space, I am “Henbob UK”.)
January 27th, 2008 at 3:19 am
30 Hours!!! Thats allot. I’ve played it for 3. It is awesome though.
January 27th, 2008 at 3:59 am
Jeff, I’m glad you’re enjoying Burnout, I really am, but please don’t forget your fans, especially the ones who can’t afford to buy a new videogame right at the moment. We need you! Come on people, say it with me: points…Points…POINTS!!! p.s. when is the Q&A mailbox going up? I got a lot of questions and I know you’ll never see this post so….
January 27th, 2008 at 3:59 am
I have spent 27 hours since Tuesday playing it but only have 30% done. Im spending most of the time online. I play the game with the sound off so I dont have to hear DJ Suck and the worst group of songs ever. A death (cant hear) person can pick better music than who ever did it for this game.
January 27th, 2008 at 4:51 am
damn thats a fun game i got it for the 360 and having a blast. but thirty hours insane
January 27th, 2008 at 4:53 am
Okay, there is some green grass I have noticed when I am barrel rolling though the air in the more suburban areas of PC, but where are the pretty girls? Not that you really need them, as Alex pointed out the crashes are vaugely..erotic. Ooooh.
I am turned off the majority of the shite trax; anyone for Girlfriend by Avril Lavine? Im tickled that Stand and Deliver by Adam Ant is in the roster(your money or your life!), and when Alice in Chains, Faith No More, and Janes Addiction start a-crunching I whack up the volume and start screeching like a chimp on helium. WHOOOO-HOOO! Also, Rusty Cage by Soundgarden brings a tear to my eye, harking back to a long gone yesteryear, playing Road Rash on the 3DO. It makes me drive sad(crash). What is it with my taste in music being stuck on early 90’s? I might stick Girlfriend back on…
January 27th, 2008 at 5:05 am
I’ve been loving the demo…so i may pick up this game.
I must say that i’m not completely convinced with the open world format though…i’d probably spend most of my time just driving about, instead of doing the challenges.
January 27th, 2008 at 6:55 am
OH! No more Burnout for me, early ninties music for that matter, or any xbox goodness at all! I got the three lights. Again. This will be my third time prostate in front of Microsoft’s Customer Service.
Goddamn you Bill! Back to Zack and Wiki then…
January 27th, 2008 at 7:57 am
Yeah Jeff nice playing with you last night this game is th shit for sure
January 27th, 2008 at 8:38 am
About 14 hours and 51% complete.
I’ve been playing pretty much only offline, and have 93 wins until elite, but I have a feeling I’m never gonna get there.
To me the game feels more like Burnout 2 in the physics department and the feeling of the cars than any of the more recent games. I remember in Burnout Revenge that it was impossible to barrel roll your car even if you went off a ramp at an angle (it would just stall in the air at 45 degrees).
None of my friends online have it yet, and like you said more tutorials would have been helpful. How the hell do you Power Park? It seems like I’m doing it, but alas nothing.
January 27th, 2008 at 9:00 am
wow, 30 hours?? glad you don’t have a job huh Jeff?? lol
January 27th, 2008 at 9:05 am
I went into Paradise knowing exactly how everything worked, but I guess that’s just me watching every single piece of coverage that I could for this game.
I don’t know if I knocked it or something, but when I scrolled through the songlist, Girlfriend was already to set to off. Which I found to be hilarious.
Oh yeah, did I mention that Burnout is awesome? The only thing I miss is Split-screen, but that’s because I do have friends that come over regularly. But it’s no biggy.
January 27th, 2008 at 9:30 am
i, like you Jeff, have been on this game non stop whenever i’ve had spare time… but 51% in 30 hours? i’ve been playing (as of last night) 28hrs 52mins and have 70% complete.
not that i’m bragging like but you know …
January 27th, 2008 at 9:31 am
vrommm
January 27th, 2008 at 9:44 am
btw i gotta say …
HEY HEY YOU YOU
I DONT LIKE YOUR GIRLFRIEND.
NO WAY NO WAY
I THINK YOU NEED A NEW ONE!
January 27th, 2008 at 9:52 am
I love me some Burnout. Really really like it. The only things I miss is more cameraviews, and a speedometer P:
January 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Yeah I`m about where you are right now in it. It`s super fun and addicting, it has that “just one more race” vibe to it that makes you play way longer than you planned too. See ya online.
January 27th, 2008 at 10:17 am
I must be on total polar opposites here… I think Atomika is actually pretty decent in the game. I thought he was better in SSX3. And I -hate- it that “Paradise City” whenever you start the game. Not to piss anyone off, but Guns N’ Roses is garbage, the fact that you can’t turn the song off makes me sad.
But other than that, it’s the best racing game I’ve played since Burnout 3.
January 27th, 2008 at 10:29 am
i dont know how long ive played, or how much ive done. what i do know is, dj atomica sucks. and collecting billboards and smashing gates is like the orbs in crackdown. ive spent a good few hours just trying to smash billboards… damn you criterion.
January 27th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Can’t wait! Though I expect that right around the time I get a working 360 in the mail from Microsoft, all my friends who are totally obsessed with playing this game right now will be burning out on it (no pun intended) and moving on to other things.
January 27th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Am I the only one who actually LIKES the radio DJ? A lot of people hated him and I never found him annoying at all.
January 27th, 2008 at 11:19 am
It would be faster to learn the game if players just didn’t have so much against manuals. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if these same people asked: “What’s this thing with four tires.”
January 27th, 2008 at 11:49 am
ok. lets just get it out of the way right here. burnout takedown was the best game of the burnout series, & burnout paradise can never be like that one.
January 27th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
This is a question I would like answered in the next points report please.
I noticed the Hotspot doesn’t use your music now but the UK podcast does what gives?
January 27th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
gotta say i think burnout paradise is awsome i have racked up 13 hours but in the UK its only been out 48 hours. Its great and ime only 26% through it
January 27th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
I’m around 24 hours, less than 50% complete, Burnout license, and 560 points.
My mind is still blown on a daily basis. I haven’t played online that much, but it could have been more. Don’t get me wrong, this is the best game in the series in my expect opinion (biggest American Burnout fan here), but I guess I miss the giant yellow arrows.
January 27th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
No Falcon, we may be in a tie for biggest American Burnout fan. I’ve been playing Paradise (only 30% in, freaking AMAZING game) and Revenge online (only Brits playing now) and nothing else all week. I’ve got well of 130 hours invested in Revenge according to the timer, and I’m sure Paradise will be up there given time. Jeff man, what is it about Burnout? Why is this car game so goddamn addicting and fun. You know games. Tells us (not that it will change anything – Burnout will still own our lives).
January 27th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
At least Stryker is a real DJ and was at KROQ. A fake xtreme DJ is about the worst you could without making him foreign, Shit a Ranchero music station with Cucue would at least be realistic give nthe city. This douche is so bad that he makes the game unbearable. I can’t buy it, or even play it with that lame ass chattering.
I give props to EA and Criterion for trying something new, but it’s another Def Jam ICON as far as I’m concerned.
January 27th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Jeff. You seriously need to get Adsense. It’s a free ad service by google, and it’ll really help you out, looking for a job and everything. Seriously, until you find a job, USE ADSENSE. You have a lot of people coming to your blog. I hope I helped.
January 27th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
there should be a patch to shut dj atomica’s mouth.
January 27th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
why do people hate DJ Atomica? i don’t mind him really. His comments can be occasionally useful.
i’ve now got all Smashes, Billboards, found all events and done all Super Jumps. Now trying to do the rest which should take me a long time.
When i had done those tasks listed above, for a second i thought ‘great, ive nearly finished it’ but then realised how much more i really need to do, nearly 80odd races, i need to do all street race rules and i also need to do the showtime mode on most streets.
So much to do in such a ‘relatively’ small map … what an awesome game this really is.
January 27th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Take that back. Now at ~23 hours with 59% complete and 620 points.
I think I’m the biggest fan, as the first time I got banned from the GS forums was due to TO much Burnout-ism.
January 27th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
ya burnout is grea have yet to take it online though, i love just cruising around myself and whenever that new car that you unlock comes and pummels me i get kind of mad so i don’t want to put up with 7 other crashing into me
January 27th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I’m in the same boat you are Jeff. Logged in around 25 hours since the release and I’m down to my last few billboards, smashes, and jumps, and god are those a bitch to track down. I’m really digging the online challenges but crash mode is deeply missed.

Actually in the Italian Dub of the game they used a wo^^man with a Hot and sexy voice and I have to tell you: the result is way better (and less lame) than the other burnout.

I know how you feel,i’ve put in over 60 hours, got 100%,just a few things online to do.I love this game.
