Proof of Life (or “I want my shirt, I want my spoon.”)
December 10th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
So, hello and welcome, I’m Jeff Gerstmann, this is my personal blog at jeffgerstmann.net. Because jeffgerstmann.com was taken… which is completely insane. Anyway, I’m mainly starting this site up to give people a centralized place to hear directly from me, as all these bits and pieces that have gotten out to game news sites via interviews and the blog on my MySpace account aren’t really the best way to communicate. So if you’re interested in what I plan to do from here, this is the place. I’ll also be sharing my thoughts on games and the business that surrounds them, perhaps with an occasional video or two.
To start with the #1 question that I’ve been getting asked, I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to do next just yet, and even if I was, I probably wouldn’t be ready to talk about it at the moment. I’ve spoken with a few interested parties and there are a lot of people out there with some cool-sounding ideas. I have a lot of ideas of my own, and I’ve been jotting them down as they come to me. But I’m not exactly rushing into anything, either. Just like girlfriends, getting a job while I’m on the rebound probably isn’t the greatest idea in the world, and I want to make sure I’ve weighed my options out carefully before acting.
I recently made an appearance on Tekzilla, a weekly online tech show put on by the good people over at Revision3. I had fun speaking with Neha Tiwari about some decidedly ghetto game-like peripherals, as well as the real stuff, like Nintendo’s Zapper and the Rock Band equipment. Speaking of which, my Rock Band guitar busted after a couple days of intense use. It no longer strums down, only up, making it a great bass controller, but an awful guitar controller. Sounds like the replacement process that EA is running has been pretty smooth for most people, but it’s still unfortunate that such an amazing game has been brought down a notch by faulty hardware.
But we can talk more about individual games later. For now, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that’s written, thanks for all the touching tributes (both from my friends at GameSpot who I miss very much and from people who enjoyed what I did there), and that you probably haven’t seen the last of me.
December 11th, 2007 at 4:26 pm
You know, I think it was a situation like this that got Cobra Commander started down his path to infamy. Something to consider, is all.
December 13th, 2007 at 10:35 am
Don’t be scrrred!
December 15th, 2007 at 10:50 pm
…you “probably” haven’t seen the last of me.
What’s that supposed to mean? Are you trying to punk us?
December 16th, 2007 at 5:34 am
I’m glad you corrected Neha in calling it the Wii Remote instead of “Wiimote”. Wiimote makes no sense.
December 16th, 2007 at 6:20 am
It is great to hear from you, jeff!
December 16th, 2007 at 1:25 pm
Hey Jeff, glad to see you’re still alive and kicking.
December 16th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Keep on rockin’, Jeff. I’ll be checking back in every now and then.
Peace.
December 16th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
Ah, nice to hear from you. Good luck Sir!
December 16th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
It’se nice, I like!
December 16th, 2007 at 6:24 pm
Sorry about the whole jeffgerstmann.com being taken thing. I figured you might be starting up your own site and wanted to make a quick buck.
December 16th, 2007 at 10:25 pm
Hey Jeff, You’re the shit and always have been, i was wondering if you could hit me up on my email, had a question that you could answer (not related to Gerstmanngate) thanks: chaoticprout@gmail.com
December 17th, 2007 at 12:01 am
Yeah man! Glad to see that you can´t kill a man without a heart. The Tekzilla thing was very smooth. Do I detect a more suttle form of Gerstamann from here on? Oh man, I hope you don´t go all Fraiser on us all. LOL
Yeah, enjoy the holidays and take your time. You´ve earned it. Lay down and go underground and then jsut come out when nobody expects it. Its better to catch people off guard. I think you should do what you recommended for J-Allards return (of course that jsut me wishing)… just come out on some net-cast or whatever audio-visual streaming signal you can get ahold off and go: I´M BACK FOOL!!!
Best of wishes and hope you have a great holiday season.
December 17th, 2007 at 12:18 am
I just found your new blog while randomly checking to see if you had said anything more on your GameSpot one. Once people realize you’re back online posting things, I’m sure you’ll have a lot more traffic. Word of mouth (or posts…) will travel fast I’m sure.
Hope you’re having a good break BTW.
December 17th, 2007 at 12:27 am
It’s nice to hear from you again, I practically peed myself when I saw you had a new blog on GameSpot. I’ll definitely be checking back on here often.
December 17th, 2007 at 12:36 am
Greetings from Otoh Gunga, Jeff.
December 17th, 2007 at 12:38 am
i miss you Jeff! glad to hear from you again. i’ve seen you playing a lot of games lately so that’s cool. i’ll be looking forward to the new Points Reports without any language filters this time, ya hear? ^_^’
December 17th, 2007 at 12:38 am
There’s a huge problem with the Rock Band guitars breaking. A lot of podcasts I listen too have been having the same problem (the guitar only strumming up)and some of my friends have had the same problem.
Anyway, it’s really nice to hear from you again. I (and just about everyone else) would love to see you continuing to review games.
Oh, please post more Points Reports. We all miss watching those.
December 17th, 2007 at 12:40 am
Yay! Gerstmann isn’t dead!
December 17th, 2007 at 12:57 am
Good to hear from you. Added to favs
December 17th, 2007 at 1:00 am
w00t. which is apparently a real word now. just think, this time next year wiimote might be too. this is one crazy world, and i’m glad to have your opinion on it again jeff.
December 17th, 2007 at 1:10 am
it’s nice that we can still get your opinions on games now, but it’s definitely sad that your not on on the spot anymore, first rich then you, it’s a sad sad day on thursdays.
December 17th, 2007 at 2:15 am
Great to see you alive and kicking. I guess the obvious question is what the hell happened. I watched On The Spot after you left and they looked upset and so am I. I actually read a notice in a swedish (non-gaming) local magazine that you had to leave GS and the rumor about Eidos.
Well, anyway, great to hear from you. I’ll be checking your blog from time to time.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
December 17th, 2007 at 2:40 am
Your Blog is Black!
Is this all new code?
Keep on keeping on, Jeff!
December 17th, 2007 at 3:22 am
Well, it’s good to see we have a place to hear from you.
December 17th, 2007 at 4:09 am
Well said Jeff, good luck!
December 17th, 2007 at 4:12 am
Great to hear from you! Unemployment sucks! I just graduated college and I’m having a rough time finding work in my major.
I bought a Nintendo Wii and Resident Evil 4 to pass the time with, but I’m stuck on the part where Leon gets his Leonardo DiCaprio looking head chain-sawed off.
Oh well, that was pretty random.
Hey, maybe you could become the Roger Ebert of videogame / technology reviewers; perhaps have your own website and syndicated column? Um, of course you would be an Ebert that actually LIKES games. Since you are now renowned as “bona fide” I’m sure you could set that up.
Best of luck to you and I’m looking forward to reading as much as you care to post on your blogs.
December 17th, 2007 at 5:22 am
glad your back on the grid
December 17th, 2007 at 5:24 am
Awesome. I also agree that a new points report would be cool as hell.
December 17th, 2007 at 6:32 am
My guitar was pretty crappy out of the box, I don’t think I can hadndle it without a microswitch. Perhaps that’s just the way the first batch are, but mine’s on its way back and I’m hoping for a clicky one in return.
Glad to hear you have high sprits, I’d be devistated and would proably go into internet hiding for a while. Perhaps when you get work you’ll change your gamertag, hmm IGNspotting? JoystiqSpotting?
December 17th, 2007 at 7:19 am
Ya heard??
December 17th, 2007 at 7:25 am
Glad to see some proof of life from you. Just let us all know where you set up shop next so we can all flock there. Hey, at least here you don’t have console fan boys!
December 17th, 2007 at 7:47 am
Dude, this is great! Expand Expand!!!!
December 17th, 2007 at 8:08 am
I wish you good luck, Jeff. And i will definitely keep a track on this blog.
December 17th, 2007 at 8:42 am
Glad to see you still active man. So what’s wrong with a rebound girl? You gotta stay on your game man. You don’t have to keep em just borrow em for a little while. Same can be said of a job. That’s me, but you obviously know to be true to yourself - that’s very honorable man.

I CALLED IT!!
December 17th, 2007 at 8:53 am
Good to hear from you, Jeff.
I never really guessed I would’ve become so attached to Gamespot, but after getting fed up with 1up’s “edgy attitude” public self-image I went to Gamespot and I think part of the reason I latched on to it was because of you. I don’t want to sound creepy, but I just enjoy your stuff, plain and simple. The duo of you and Ryan Davis really made stuff like On The Spot so enjoyable.
So yeah, good to see you went and got a blog.
December 17th, 2007 at 8:54 am
Welcome back Jeff! Can’t wait for some good’ol points reports! or video blogs in general.
December 17th, 2007 at 8:54 am
JEFF!:D
I knew you would not leave us!
December 17th, 2007 at 8:55 am
The not-strumming-down-anymore thing happened with my friend’s Rock Band Guitar. He took it apart, cleaned it out and it works fine again. Might wanna try that.
Rawr.
December 17th, 2007 at 9:27 am
Jeff wish you all the best! Bookmarked your blog. Can’t wait to see what’s next. I hope you will be able to take some time to get into Dream Skincare now.
December 17th, 2007 at 10:16 am
Jeff, hope everything is going great and you are enjoying your severence. My questions are whether you plan any podcasts on your own and whether you get to keep you x-box live id.
wjm iii
December 17th, 2007 at 10:43 am
It’s awesome to see that you’re still active in the world of videogames. This blog is definitely going on my Google Reader Account!
Peace and good luck finding a new job, whether it be editorial or in game development…………..
December 17th, 2007 at 10:55 am
Just watched your appearance on Tekzilla, and i have to say its nice to see you back in the light and in your great sarcastic humorus self.
Your fans will follow you to whatever path you choose
Keep your spirits up and keep “gameSpotting”
December 17th, 2007 at 11:00 am
Nice to see you put a blog so you can keep in touch with your fans.
Anyway glad you’re alright, hopefully you can get something soon. Have you thought of creating your own review site?
December 17th, 2007 at 11:13 am
I think its good to take a sabbatical after the events that have occurred. I’m looking forward to your entries here and hopefully you can keep the points report coming.
I wonder…can you put videos on this blog?
*shrugs shoulders*
Anyways, much like everyone else here, it’s really good to hear from you.
December 17th, 2007 at 11:42 am
Hey, Jeff! I’m a fellow GSer that was tracking your blogs and that’s how I found the link to this place. I’m really sorry what happened, and you definitely deserved more professional courtesy than was given to you in your last hours. I don’t know how much of the rumors were true about how they treated you (escorting you out of the building, etc.) but if that’s true then that was totally wrong.
Good to hear you’re not jumping into anything immediately. You’re doing the right thing by just taking a break and weighing your options. I’ll be following your blogs here now. Take care.

December 17th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Glad you made this blog, I’ve added the RSS feed. You’re one of the greatest guys in the games industry and are fantastic at your job/former job. I hope you post on a lot on this blog about your thoughts on games and other things, like your thoughts on food.
Keep up the good work, and good luck with all your future projects. You are forever a legend.
December 17th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Glad to see you’re still living Jeff - after all, gaming humour is like a religion, and you are the shit!
Good luck in the future, and Happy Christmas!
December 17th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Hey Jeff! So glad you’re back! I’m still really pissed about the GS thing but glad that you are still planning on giving the online community your two cents on video games and everything else that us (gamers) care about! Too bad it came to this but it’s good you have your own blog! All internet celebs should have one you know!
December 17th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
I like seeing you still out and about online Mr. Gerstmann, for awhile after the whole GameSpot thing I felt even worse not seeing you speak yer mind.
Hopefully whatever you do next in life your skills can be applied and used properly… not saying that bit on Tekzilla was horrible, it just sucked for that lady to start conversation by mentioning your past employment.
hope the holidays treats you good sir ^_^
December 17th, 2007 at 2:32 pm
He lives! Glad to see you back man.
December 17th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Great to see you back.
December 17th, 2007 at 7:52 pm
I just found about this. I hope everything goes great for you Jeff. I am hoping for some cool insider info and honest reviews.
December 17th, 2007 at 10:22 pm
Hey, Jeff. Read your blog on Gamespot and saw the link. Glad to know you haven’t fell from the edge of the earth and you’re still rocking on. I’ll be looking at this site for your future blog posts. Take care and I hope you succeed in whatever you do in the future.
December 18th, 2007 at 12:55 am

December 18th, 2007 at 4:00 am
He Lives!!, great news indeed. Sorry bout the .com address, saw it got snatched the day the news broke, at least now it goes to the Wiki article (which needs a pic real bad) and not some generic spam ad page thing.
Keep the posts flowin. And really looking forward to some videos.
December 18th, 2007 at 7:48 am
Glad to hear from you Jeff. Glad to know you’re still kicking regardless what happened at GS. I’ll be checking bakc here often.
December 18th, 2007 at 8:44 am
It’s great to find you here dude. I hope you’ll give us some personal game reviews on your blog, while you’re deciding what do do in the future. Happy Holidays.
December 18th, 2007 at 11:43 am
Jeff, you’re a wonderful guy.
I just want to say that you’ve been a personal inspiration to me and many others throughout the years. I’ll work hard to keep your memory alive and I wish you the very best in whatever path your future career takes you.
Jeff, you ARE THE MAN.
VIVA LA JEFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 18th, 2007 at 11:49 am
Hmm, seems you’ve been posting a lot more frequently here than you did at GameSpot, so that’s a plus. One thing though, now that this is a actual “blog” blog, does this mean I get to say “fuck” finally? Let me know.

December 18th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

December 18th, 2007 at 9:21 pm
Hey! It’s good to see you’re still alive and getting things done.
December 18th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

December 19th, 2007 at 1:51 am

You still gonna keep trying to hit up the E3s? If so, I’ll see ya there maybe, spoke to Rich last one haha he’s a nice guy. Saw you but you were heading out off the pier. O well cya round man don’t give up, the world is in the hands of the one who imagines it to be in their hands.
~knux
btw i pulled out of GS too so no more reviews from me, I’ll prob give up the freelance bizz altogether, didn’t pay that well…
December 19th, 2007 at 7:01 am
good to hear from you Jeff. Ever consider creating your own website?? I know it might be too demanding, but it would be awesome. anyway, i bet you will have no problem finding a new job, probably a better paying job. I’ll definately check back to see whats up on your blog, peace.
December 19th, 2007 at 7:28 am
Jeff,
So great to see you back, I’ll be here to see what you’re up to and hear what you have to say. I’m a huge fan of your work, and I’m saddened by what happened (whatever the reasons). However, Gamespot’s loss is someone else’s gain, and I’m eagerly anticipating whatever it is you do next.
Harry
PS Any chance that Deadly Electric might come out sometime soon?
December 19th, 2007 at 8:39 am
Jeff! This is awesome you have your own site now! I am a huge fan. You’re work at gamespot.com was half the reason I became a die hard fan of that site. Rock on, man.
December 19th, 2007 at 9:26 am
FIVE GRAND! Awesome, Jeff, thanks for doing this.
December 19th, 2007 at 9:31 am
Glad to see you back on the internet.
December 19th, 2007 at 1:06 pm

December 19th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

December 19th, 2007 at 5:42 pm
well its great to hear your doing well. Can not wait till you do your points reports was my favourite part of gamespot, which by the way i just got moded on the forum cause i mentioned your blog site anyway keep it up……..
December 19th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
Jeff, you’re a hero among gamers. I saw some of your reviews before you were “terminated” but I didn’t really know your name until “the incident”. I hope you find a great job if you haven’t already. I’m sure you will. Anyway, I appreciated the realness of your reviews. Unlike a lot of website and magazine reviews these days, you actually said what you thought about the game and gave us gamers a good indication if the game was amazing or if it was garbage. I wish something could be done about this nonsense. Is gamespot even trustworthy? I don’t trust the business people, that’s for sure.
December 20th, 2007 at 1:11 am
jeff…. I’m happy your active (this site). It’s great to hear from you. I’ve added this site to my favorites. you were a large part of gamespot, and its happy to see that I’ve refound that major part here. I can’t wait to see where you go in the future… I’ll be watching with anticipation.
December 20th, 2007 at 8:13 am
Hello Jeff,
i was back GS since I had not been there for two (or maybe four) weeks, and I found out you where missing…
I checked an old OTS epi and saw your colleges almost crying on screen about your dismissal, so I went like WTF happend.
I read some news Articles about people complaining that GS sucks and that IGN is better BLA BLA f*cking BLA.
One dude in that article’s response thingy posted your personal web adres and BAM! you’re kicking it on your personel blog! YEAH! this is awesome, I hope this way you don’t have to censor your statements and people will understand what is really going on…
Sucks that you got canned, but hey as you said yourself, you’re not dead (yet), so keep on rocking the internets! and we will here from you!
I hope you’re still able to have a pleasant christmass.

It’s great to see this site and it’s great to hear from you. Wherever you go, I shall follow. Not in some weird ritualistic cult way. But in a fuzzy, happy bunny kind of way lol. Now can you please get a job on AOTS on g4 Tech TV??? lol.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:39 pm
Dude!!
First of all I have to say I have been lost without your guidance on all things soda, 7-11 edibles and oh yeah something on games of course. I just moved into a new apartment that had its own microwave. So now I have two side by side. I tried to explain to my wife your comments about how wonderful it was to have this ability to heat up the burito and chili at the same time with both being hot .. it didn’t work. Still having can be just as good as wanting after all.
Also..
I have wanted to say for the longest time that your video reports the night Street Fighter went up on XBL were the best. I’m sure we all have done that squint over a dim light when reading those stupid points card codes.
Hang in there and enjoy the time off. 2008 is going to be one odd year and you want to be comfortable at wherever your new digs take you.
Happy Holidays to you and yours!
December 21st, 2007 at 5:41 am
Jeff - Please, please tell us what you think about Rock Band! We all waited for a year a more just to hear you talk about it on HotSpot and now have been deprived of your discourse.
thanks!
December 21st, 2007 at 5:45 pm
jeffgerstmann.net has been bookmarked.
Thanks

“Just like girlfriends, getting a job while I’m on the rebound probably isn’t the greatest idea in the world, and I want to make sure I’ve weighed my options out carefully before acting.”
…where were you when I was looking for a job back in the summer?! Bah.
Chuck E Cheese is easy money for relatively little work, but all I do is stand at the entrance all day, greeting kids, stamping kids and adults left hands, (”No, your OTHER left Jimmy! HAHAHA! I bet you haven’t heard THAT one before, now have you?! :D”), and checking to make sure no one’s stealing kids (”Aww, shucks, you mean we can’t leave them here?!?! HAHAHA, oh, I am on SUCH a roll today!”).
Then again, I could be flipping burgers for Jimmy and his awesome father and hear, “Look, Jimmy! Another stupid, uneducated high school drop out! OH, I am teaching my child to assume the worst of people! HAHA!”
December 22nd, 2007 at 6:59 am
Hey, jeff…nice to see you’re still around..plz keep this blog running..since you left GS, it’s been some sad weeks…hope u change that in the near future
December 22nd, 2007 at 10:58 pm

Great to see you around Jeff, I’m definitely going to be a regular viewer of your site. Build… uhh write it and they will come.
On a more constructive note, reading from a black background really isn’t that comfortable.

Come and visit me at Gotham City if you have a chance, though at the moment I’m very busy trying to catch a maniac clown with the name of Joker!
Best Regards,

Hi Jeff,
It is good to know you are doing well!
I miss your reviews and all the other stuff you did back at GameSpot, but it is great that I still can get some nice Jeff content to read and watch.
Take care man, and I’m looking forward to read, listen and watch all you great stuff in the future.
I wish you all the best mate!
